Engineering Micro Fastener Options

Custom fastener

The engineering industry is extremely complex and variable. It requires specified knowledge to produce safe and effective products. Additionally, one of the most important parts of the engineering design is in the smaller parts. Without durable and lasting parts, like the micro fasteners, it would be difficult to hold the final product together. Sometimes, it requires specialized design and production services just for these smaller parts.

The need for custom small screw specialists
Typically, screws come in a set size and design. This previously designed size fits the majority of products that require screws. However, when a new engineering product is designed, it can require custom small screw sizes. In order to design the right size, a custom small screw specialist is needed. Custom screw options allow the designer to create a variety of screws that fit in custom areas and are made up of non traditional sizes.

Another option for non traditional sizes are SEMS screws. SEMS screws are easily adjustable, making them perfect for the hard to fit screw size. SEMS screws combine two separate parts into one pre assembled, low cost fastener. With washers under the head, SEMS screws are fast, permanent, and easily adaptable to many applications. They are often used when a specialty size is needed, but there is little time to design something specific.

Hi lo screws
Hi lo screws may also be used to complete product designs. Hi lo screws have a reduced minor diameter and therefore displace less plastic material and minimize stress. These screws have a double lead high and low thread with the high thread having a 30 degree thread form that further minimizes material displacement while providing positive thread engagement. Hi lo screws are perfect for preventing stripping away of screws that may otherwise be too tight. It is also an option for product development that requires specific thread engagements or otherwise difficult to assemble products.

The use of micro fasteners
In some projects, custom screws are not the answer. Instead, micro fasteners or other types of custom fasteners may be used to adhere products together. There are many generic custom fastener options available. Additionally, a customized fastener may be specifically developed for the product. Micro fasteners are not as permanent as other options, including custom small screws or Hi lo screws, but they are still an option.

Permanent and non permanent patches
Although patches are not used as often, they are still a design option. They tend to be a quicker solution. Engineers may use the ND patch to pull products together either for testing or for a quick solution, until customized screws can be designed. When assembled with a mating part, ND Patch is compressed. The engineered plastic (typically a Nylon Patch) resists this compression and acts like a wedge, increasing the metal contact 180 degrees opposite the material. This mechanical force creates a strong, yet fully adjustable lock which will not weaken, even under extreme vibration. It is actually one of the most durable adhesive options.

Engineering products require a lot of previous design before they are actually completed. Although the product design is extremely important, it is not everything. Engineers also have to calculate how to combine different products and how they will be permanent connected. A few of the most common methods for doing this include micro fasteners, custom screw sizes, ND Patches, and hi lo screws.
