Once upon a time, furniture had no pretense. Greeks and romans were the first to use tables to eat and after they were finished, tables fit right under their beds. You see what’s happening there – Utility. Modern furniture puts pageantry before function. It is more important, after all, that a table sit in your meager living space that that it can fit a small army, right? Here are just a few other examples of where modern designer furniture goes wrong.
When sofas made you sit upright.
Do you know what the work couch means in French? To recline. Desks are for sitting upright. Couches should really let your bodies relax and be more like beds. Modern home furniture at modern furniture stores act like a a sofa bed is the answer but it isn’t! The sofa should be more like a recliner or bed from the start.
The Wassily Chair
Have you seen one of these things? it looks very uncomfortable and it looks like it isn’t capable of coexisting with a table. This chair is a perfect example of the lack of utility that modern furniture store offer.
When backless stools became cool
Back in the day, thrones were for important people and everyone else gets a stool. But now that we have lots of machines and wealth and we live in the first world, I believe everyone should get a throne and we should stop parading stools around at bars and coffee shops as if they are a fun thing to sit on.
he furniture market in the United States makes about $63 billion annually but I might forecast that a fraction of that is furniture that we truly live on and use. At least are doing beds right! Links like this.
