Quick Solutions for Clogged Pipes

Having a blocked drain is a common problem, and can turn your sink into a pretty gross mess. However, you may not need to spend a lot of money on a plumber to get the pipes unclogged. Try these 5 methods to clear your drain.

Boiling Water

Let’s start with the simplest solution. Simply boil about 2 liters of water and pour slowly down the sink. Add dish soap for tougher clogs. It may take a few tries, but this usually works.

Baking Soda and Vinegar

Mix half a cup of baking soda with half a cup of vinegar and pour into the drain. The solution will bubble and when it subsides you will put a stopper on top of the drain. Let it sit for an hour and then pour in boiling water.

Salt, Borax, and Vinegar

Mix a 1/4 cup of salt, 1/4 cup borax, and 1/2 cup vinegar together and pour into the sink. Let it sit for half an hour and then run the tap on hot to clear

Baking Soda and Salt

Mix baking soda and salt together and pour into the drain. Let this sit overnight, and then use boiling water to clear the clog.

Plunger/Wire Coat Hanger

As a last resort, try using a plunger or the hook end of a wire coat hanger to clear out the blockage in the drain. Once you get the majority out, pour boiling water down the drain to finish it off.

These methods are tried and true, and inexpensive compared to hiring a plumber. Try them for yourself next time your sink is clogged!
