Leaks happen all the time in the home. Leaks are one of the most common plumbing repairs handled by plumbers. In this video, a professional plumber goes over how you can handle common leaks in your home.
There are multiple kinds of leaks that can occur. The type of leak depends on the type of pipe or joint that is leaking. Depending on the type of pipe or joint that is leaking, different plumbing repairs are required. Different joints require different kinds of sealant to repair them so this information is very important. Types of joints include IPS joints, compression joints and soldered joints. Each of these require different service and different materials to fix.
To repair an IPS joint you can use Teflon tape to seal the leak. This is a non-sticky, sealing tape used by most plumbers. You want to wrap this tape around the end of the joint to seal the leak. Another material you can use to seal an IPS joint leak is pipe thread sealant. A little bit of this sealant goes a long way so don’t use too much. You want to make sure it’s spread evenly on the end of the joint.
